Women urged to be advocates of peace

Ghanaian women have been asked to serve as agents of peace before, during and after the upcoming polls.

The founder and leader of the Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI), a non-governmental organisation, Ms Sonia Antwi, gave the advice during the organisation's annual retreat at East Legon in Accra.

The event was on the theme: 'Empowering Women For Peace' with an aim of impressing upon women to play their role to sustain the peace the nation was enjoying.

According to Ms Antwi, empowering women on the need to ensure peace in their households, community, religious groups and workplaces would safeguard the peace in the country beyond the election period.

Women, she said, could impress upon their husbands and children to conduct their political activities in a manner that would not lead to violence in order to maintain peace.

Election not war

For her part, the National Organiser of WEFI, Ms Herty Hammond, appealed to the supporters of the various political parties and politicians to ensure their campaign fostered unity among the people.

She said election was about exchange of ideas and not the time to prepare for war, “it's for the electorate to exercise their franchise as good citizens of Ghana and to choose the right leaders to manage the affairs of the country”.

She also urged the political leaders to be peace ambassadors in all their political activities.

The event brought together several women who shared the organisation's idea on the need for women to be supported and empowered in order for them to live above reproach.

Later, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary for WEFI, Ms Susan Abrokwa Kokroko, said it was imperative for all Ghanaians to preach peace at all times.
