Two organisations support Accra Psychiatric Hospital

The Accra Psychiatric Hospital has received donations worth over GH¢12, 000 from the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport and the Adabraka branch of the HFC bank.

At a presentation ceremony at the hospital last Saturday, two separate donations were made, comprising bags of rice, beans, maize, gari and sugar. Other items included gallons of cooking oil, cartons of milk and milo, cans of fish and loaves of bread, as well as six bales of second hand clothing.

Hospital in need

The President of the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport, Mr Nathaniel Adu, who handed over the items, said the donation was in response to a call the hospital made for support to enable it to cater for its patients.

“The announcement made on air by the hospital was of vital importance and so we decided to collaborate with the HFC bank in making this donation which we hope will make an impact in the lives of the patients,” he said.

On August 3, this year, the Accra Psychiatric Hospital stopped admitting new patients because it owed food suppliers GH¢4.1 million. The Ministry of Health has since released GH¢500,000 to the hospital.

Mr Adu urged other philanthropists to also make donations to the hospital in order to alleviate its burden.

He expressed the hope that the items donated would give the hospital some respite while it waited for the government to provide it with the required funding.

The Branch Manager of HFC bank, Adabraka branch, Mrs Josephine Amoah, said the donation was in line with the bank’s corporate social responsibility of giving back to the community.

“The Accra Psychiatric Hospital is in the same area as the bank and for that reason the bank has taken a decision to adopt the hospital. The bank will be donating annually to the hospital,” she said.

She also announced that the bank had plans to adopt a ward in the hospital in the coming year.

She explained that the donation was sponsored with contributions from staff and some customers of the bank.

Healed patients

The two donors called on the families of patients who had been healed to help to integrate them into the society to reduce the congestion at the hospital, as well as the burden on the government

Mr Emmanuel Febiri of the Public Relations Unit of the Hospital thanked the two organisations for their support and said the items had brought a huge relief to the hospital.

“In July, our food suppliers ceased giving us supplies and that was why we had to appeal to the public to come to our aid and thankfully many people responded to our call. The government listened and also gave us some funds”, he said.

He promised that the items would be used for the intended purpose.
