Three robbers killed in shoot-out with Kumasi police

Three suspected robbers were last Monday night shot dead by the police when they and two accomplices were on their way to rob a house behind the SSNIT Flats at Asuoyeboa in Kumasi.

The five-member gang allegedly engaged the police in a shoot-out after disobeying the call of the police to stop.

In an attempt to escape, the robbers started firing at the police car and the police returned fire, resulting in three of them being shot dead, while the remaining two escaped.

Briefing

Briefing the press, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Ampofoh-Duku, said the police had picked intelligence that a group of robbers was preparing to rob a house at Asuoyeboa.

He said the police laid ambush and around 2a.m, a taxi occupied by five people appeared. The police were said to have signalled the taxi to stop but the driver refused to.

Mr Ampofo-Duku said three of the suspects got out of the taxi and ran into the bush after the police returned fire.

He said the driver and one other suspect, who the police believed sustained gunshot wounds, managed to escape.

Reinforcement

Mr Ampofo-Duku said the police called for reinforcement and together with the new team, combed the area and found the three lying dead in the bush.

The police retrieved two locally manufactured pistols, two mobile phones, two empty cartridges, a knife, a piece of wood and GH¢24 cash from the scene.

Mr Ampofoh Duku said one of the dead had been identified as Bernard Ali who was part of a gang of robbers who, on July 21, attacked a Chinese miner and his driver while they were on their way to the hospital.

He said in that attack, the driver of the Chinese miner was shot dead, and their vehicle ran into a ditch.
