Raise products capable of harnessing country’s natural resources

The Bishop of the Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church, the Rt Rev. Samuel K. Osabutey, has called on technical universities to strengthen their traditional role of training the right calibre of technocrats capable of harnessing the country’s natural resources.

He said the change in emphasis from that role, coupled with weak institutional structures, had paved the way for foreigners to take over the exploitation of the country’s natural resources, as a result of which the country had been plunged into a state of underdevelopment.

“The problem we have in this country is not about the lack of natural resources but rather the lack of effective leadership. If we have good structures in place, the exploitation of our oil reserves will not be in the hands of foreigners. We need to equip our technical universities to produce skilled personnel who will take over and efficiently manage our resources,” he said.

Rt. Rev. Osabutey made the call when he addressed the 14th Biennial Diocesan Delegates’ Conference of the Methodist Guild in Accra last Saturday.

The conference was on the theme: “Witnessing to Christ: the Role of the Methodist Guild and Social impact”. It was attended by 152 delegates drawn mainly from all the 25 circuits in the Accra Diocese of the church. There were representatives from other sectors.

Accountability

He observed that proper accountability on the part of the leadership would ensure that resources were equitably allocated to citizens in a manner that would promote sustainable development.

“God-fearing leaders ought to be financially, morally, ethically and professionally accountable in their work and take politically correct decisions that are in the interest of the public,” he said.

He urged Christians to be circumspect in their utterances as the country prepared for elections on December 7, this year, adding that Christianity was all about peace and unity.

He said Christians ought to build their capacities by acquiring the right skills and training if they were to make an impact in society as the theme required of them.

Training of the youth

The President of the Diocesan Guild, Bro. Nkwantabisa Angu, urged the younger generation to be prepared to take over the mantle of leadership from the older generation.

He, therefore, called for proper programmes to be initiated as a means to tap the potential of the youth.

Bro. Angu called on Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs) to support needy students with their education by rolling out social intervention programmes, especially offering scholarships to them.

The Diocesan Lay Chairman, Bro. Solomon Quaye Lartey, urged the delegates at the conference and the public to take periodic stock of their actions.

He said that was the only way they could identify their strengths and weaknesses and make progress in life.
