PSC Tema Shipyard will be transformed - GPHA boss assures workers

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GPHA), Mr Richard Anamoo, has assured workers of  PSC Tema Shipyard that steps are being taken to ensure that the shipyard becomes profitable.

He said that the GPHA would inject $5 million to improve operations of the shipyard.

Mr Anamoo gave the assurance when he addressed  workers of the shipyard at a maiden staff durbar. The authority took over the management of the Shipyard on July 1, 2016, following a cabinet decision that endorsed a proposal of the workers union of the facility.

He said beyond the capital injection into operational areas, the right attitude towards work would be a critical success factor.

“You must demonstrate professionalism in the discharge of your duties, and also endeavour to avail your expertise at the services of the new management to ensure operational efficiencies”, Mr Anamoo said.

National Challenge

He told the workers that the handing-over of the facility was not only entrusted to GPHA, but to the entire workforce which struggled and fought for what they felt was right.

“This is a national challenge that has been thrown to us, and we must work hard to the envy of all,” he said.

The shipyard has a history of a number of demonstrations spanning  two decades, Mr Anamoo therefore  tasked the workers to rather channel their energies into making the drydock a better working place, now that their agitations had resulted in positive actions.

“Let us tell the people of this country that we are not what they think we are, but we are just victims of circumstances and given the opportunity, we are ready to turn this place into a business enterprise,” Mr Anamoo said.

Job Security

He also assured the workers that the GPHA would safeguard the jobs of all workers, adding that “no worker would be laid off, and we have already demonstrated that by recalling two of your colleagues who were dismissed by the previous management”, Mr Anamoo said.

“We are not here to lay off workers, we are here to transform the Tema Shipyard,” he assured.

He also announced that capacity training programmes would be instituted for workers to enable them to  be abreast of modern ship repair methods.

Mr Anamoo hinted that the new management would ensure that international ship repair permits and the necessary certifications would be sought for the technical staff of the company to ensure they met the international certification procedures for persons engaged in drydock and ship repair works.

The leadership of the workers union commended Mr Anamoo and the GPHA for appointing Capt Kwesi Micah and pledged their commitment to work hard and ensure the shipyard became a success story.
