The joint operation by the Commercial Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the SWAT Unit of the Ghana Police Service also led to the confiscation of alleged fake products which were found in the suspects’ shops.

The items retrieved included television and fridge guards meant to protect electrical gadgets against voltage fluctuations which are harmful to all motor-operated gadgets.

Criminal offence

Briefing journalists after the operation at Okaishie and Opera Square in Accra, the Director of Operations of the CID, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Felix Mawusi, said the operation was to clamp down on trading in forged trademark products in the country.

He explained that under the Trademark Law, Act 876, 2015, it was criminal for anyone to deal in a product with a forged trademark.

“The offering for sale of a product with a forged trademark is contrary to Section 26 of the Trademark Act, 2004 (Act 664) as amended by Act 876 of 2014,” he said.

The team, he said, retrieved 60 voltage fluctuation control gadgets which had imitated the trademark of Sollatek Ghana Limited, a dealer in electronic gadgets.

Mr Mawusi said during interrogation, some of the suspects claimed that they had bought the products from some Chinese traders in Ghana but they could not lead the police to arrest the Chinese.

He said other suspects had told the police that they imported the products from Nigeria and China.

Mr Mawusi said the suspects would be prosecuted, while investigations continued to trace the source of the fake goods.
