The chiefs and people of the Ejura Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region are gearing up to celebrate their annual Yam festival, "Sekyirene".

The week-long celebration commences on October 15 and would end on the 22nd of the same month. A press conference took place at Ejura last Wednesday at which the festival was officially launched by the sub-traditional council of Ejura. The festival is on the theme; "United for Development"

Nana Osei Kwadwo Ansebie II, the Nifahene of the Ejura Traditional Area, performed the launch on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Ejura, Barima Osei Hwedie II, who is also the Adontenhene of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area.

He said the yam festival which was the first to be held since the new paramount chief of Ejura was installed would be held under the auspices of the Omanhene of the Asante Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

According to Nana Ansedie, the festival is expected to draw a large number of people from all walks of life, including citizens of Ejura both home and abroad, government officials and business people.

Swaziland dancers

Also expected in the country to attend the festival are dancers from the Kingdom of Swaziland.

He said the festival would be celebrated to give thanks to the ancestors of the lands, the gods of the people and the traditional stool in which the spirit of the state resides for providing the people with a bumper harvest of fresh yams in the year just gone by.

He disclosed that during the week-long celebration, a day would be set aside to perform rituals before the chiefs in the traditional area at Ejura, including Nana Ejurahene, to signify commencement of the eating of fresh yams.

Nana Ansebie said the Ejurahene would at the climax of the occasion appeal for funds for the establishment of a nursing and midwifery training school in the Ejura-Sekyedumasi Municipal Area.

First tertiary institution

He said the setting up of the school in the municipality would make it the first tertiary institution in the municipality.

He said in the interim, the municipal assembly would use an office complex that was handed over to the Ejura community by the World Vision International ( WVI) for use by students of the nursing and midwifery training school.

Nana Ansebie said a number of activities had been lined-up for the week-long programme. They include clean-up exercises at the Ejura Government Hospital, the St. Luke's Hospital at Kasei and the Ejurahene’s palace. He said there would also be a Health  Day on which a health screening exercise would be organised.

In addition, he said a Youth Day would take place where the youth would engage in competitions in bicycle racing and a football  gala. He said to climax the occasion, the Ejurahene would lead a team of traditional rulers in aπ match against the Ejura Municipal Assembly, which is expected to be led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji  Mohammed Bawa.
